After facing various trials, including a battle with mischievous coconut pirates known as the Kakamora, she earns Maui’s reluctant cooperation. He begins to teach her navigation techniques, which greatly enhance her sailing skills. Together, they navigate dangerous waters toward Te Fiti, where they hope to restore the heart and bring life back to her island. Using a tapa cloth to animate her story, Gramma Tala (Rachel House) shares the tale of the mother island, Te Fiti, with a group of young children. Te Fiti is imbued with a powerful heart that creates life and births other islands.
When Moana got into another argument with her father, after attempting to convince him to help restore the Heart in attempt to save Motunui, Moana and her father were informed that Tala was suddenly dying, much to their shock. Upon approaching Tala’s deathbed, Moana was saddened to watch her grandmother die before her eyes and did not want to leave her side. However, after Tala urged her to leave Motunui, find Maui, and restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana decided to fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish and as she left to begin her journey, she saw Tala being reincarnated into a giant manta ray. After Tala’s death, Moana immediately leaves Motuni to start her question restoring the Heart of Te Fiti alone without the aid of her father or any of her people. As she journeys to save her people, Moana still holds some care towards her father, despite the last time they have spoke as she has a nightmare of witnessing both her parents being affected by Te Kā’s curse. Some time later, Moana returns home to Motunui, joined by her crew, the other islanders and their fleet of rafts, and Maui, reuniting with her little sister and parents, and celebrating having reunited everyone across the ocean.

Moana Characters

Moana is thrown off her boat and is nearly killed by the lava demon until Maui suddently returns. Having had a change of heart, he is determined to defend Moana, despite the damaged state of his fishhook. Maui distracts Te Kā while the ocean helps Moana to Te Fiti’s now molten shores. Looking out into the distance, she notices a glowing spiral on Te Kā’s chest and realizes that the lava demon is Te Fiti. Moana sings „Know Who You Are” to tame Te Kā, who finds peace in Moana’s words and turns herself into cooled lava rock.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2” reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. Immediately after Heihei eats the heart during an encounter with little pygmy pirates known as Kakamora, the Kakamora steal Heihei forcing Moana to retrieve it, after Maui learns of her inability to sail when they try to escape. After Moana retrieves Heihei from the Kakamora, Maui is able to get their massive sailboats to collide into each other and the three make it out unharmed. In order to do so, he needs his hook which is hidden in the Realm of Monsters, held by a giant villainous coconut crab named Tamatoa.
As a result, a lava demon known as Te Kā swore vengeance and plunged the world into a slow-burning darkness. The only hope for humanity lies in the hands of a fearless hero, who must journey to find Maui and have him return the heart to its rightful place. Her father, Chief Tui, claims there is no such darkness consuming the world, and stresses the law that forbids anyone on the island from traveling past the reef. Moana fails to heed her father’s words and waddles to the ocean shores in bliss. There, she helps a struggling newborn sea turtle make its way to the ocean against predators, using a leaf.

His fear of the ocean stems from a tragic past, creating tension between his love for Moana and his desire to keep her safe. Tui’s character showcases the struggle between tradition and embracing change. Through her courage and revelation about Te Ka’s true identity, she strives to restore the heart to its rightful place. Determined, Moana sets sail to find Maui, despite her inexperience in sailing.

Amidst the panic, Moana sneaks away to the water’s edge, where she discovers a baby sea turtle in distress, threatened by a flock of frigate birds. Leaving a seashell behind, she uses a large leaf to shield the turtle and safely guide it to the ocean. The crew returns home to Motunui, leading a flotilla of the peoples of the ocean, and a celebration is held in Moana’s honor.

Nonetheless, she encourages Moana to follow her passions, no matter how challenging it may be. On October 7, 2015, Walt Disney Animation Studios released a video announcing the casting of 14-year-old Hawaiian native, Auli’i Cravalho, who will officially portray Moana. After directing The Princess and the Frog, Musker and Clements started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Mort, but rights problems prevented them from continuing with that project. To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea.

Even though Moana loves the ocean, her parents aren’t happy about her decision. When her island becomes endangered due to the threat posed by an angry Te Kā, Moana is chosen by the Ocean to journey across Oceania to the island of Te Fiti to restore the heart stolen by Maui, and save her people. Upon confronting Te Ka, Moana faces incredible challenges, followed by a revelation about Te Ka’s true Moana identity, leading to a daring attempt to restore both the heart and balance to the islands. Ultimately, with her ancestors by her side, Moana courageously places the heart back into Te Ka, who transforms back into Te Fiti, signifying life renewed. In the end, she returns to Motonui, now ready to embrace her future as a master wayfinder with her people, guided by her grandmother’s spirit and the legacy of exploration. With her dying breath, she tells Moana to go save her people and gives her the necklace used to carry the heart.
Later, Moana and her mother stand by Tala’s deathbed where they both heartbroken over her death. Then, when Moana decides to fulfill Tala’s dying wish by leaving Motunui to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, she is caught by her mother while preparing to leave but becomes happy when her mother reveals she supports her decision. As she journeys to save her people, Moana worries of her mother’s well-being where she has a nightmare of witnessing both her parents being affected by Te Kā’s curse.

Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu. Her morale restored, and with Loto having repaired their raft with materials from Tautai Vasa’s, they head for Motufetu, with the plan being for Maui to raise the island, then Moana will touch it, breaking the curse. Moana sets sail on a camakau from the cavern along with her dimwitted pet rooster, Heihei, who stowed away on it. They are caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island, where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements.
